Talk about from despair to prosperity. The Sonic the Hedgehog movie was met with some critical acclaim, but a fantastic fan reception. Maybe this wasn’t the video game movie people have been waiting for, but it was still a fun time, and showed a lot of promise.
After the disaster known as the “original design”, it honestly feels like a miracle that this movie was released, let alone enjoyed. Sure, it delayed it by a few months, but it was well worth the wait. Ben Schwartz put on a good performance as the redesigned Sonic, and Jim Carey stole the show as Robotnik. Even now leading up to the release of the second film, Egg Man sort of feels like the main attraction. There’s something about Jim Carey playing this role that gives off the feel that he’s in love with what he’s doing, and that enjoyment bleeds through the screen.
This time around, the mad doctor is seemingly making his way back to earth from what now appears to be the home world of one Knuckles the Echidna. Check out the trailer below before I go on any further:
This time around we get to see a whole lot more of Knuckles in action. Idris Elba took his turn to steal the show when the first trailer dropped back in December of 2021. The trailer was met with just about universal praise, because not only does the movie actually look good, but Elba’s voice of Knuckles was pretty iconic. Really, that’s all it took, was one line.
The trailer starts out cute, including some corny family friendly jokes and a nice little nod with Thomas’s ringtone. Sonic and his best buddy Tails, who is fortunately retaining his original voice actor, burst onto the scene with some jokes in tow.
By now, you’ve watched the trailer. You don’t need me to hold your hand and explain what you just watched from here on out, and the trailer itself isn’t why I’m excited for this movie. It’s the OBVIOUS care and level of detail the cast and crew are putting into this movie.
First of all, the official poster. Look familiar?
Second, the actors. I already mentioned Tails’ original voice is back. But the rest of the cast just feel like they CARE about being a part of this franchise. Jim Carey is notorious for not doing sequels, and the man looks like he’s having a full return to form on screen as Egg Man. Hell, he even started playing the games with his grandson to prep for the movies. Idris Elba’s gotten in on the fun, going crazy viral back in November when he announced his role.
To see actors on screen care (not to leave the rest out, but you get the point) about the property they’re bringing to life really instills a sense of hope that the franchise is in good hands. There’s been a million horrific video game movies out there, and it feels good to say that Sonic is not one of them.
